Applying to Teach with F4Ed

Thank you for your interest in F4Ed, the afterschool and summer program that teaches math and other subjects to children in grades K-5 using proven international curricula. Our instructors are of the highest caliber and have a passion for working with kids in an engaging and entertaining atmosphere.

Our program was started in 2005 by a Stanford graduate student and was a top finisher in the Stanford Social E-Challenge competition. Though it has since grown to serve 20 nearby elementary schools and hundreds of children, it remains very much a start-up. The organization is unique in that it is predominantly managed and staffed by undergraduates, primarily from Stanford.

What we look for: F4Ed instructors are selected based on their energy, enthusiasm, teaching talent, aptitude for working with children, mathematical and verbal fortitude, and fitness as role models. Successful applicants must complete a comprehensive and rigorous training program.

"I have been blabbering about how wonderful the program is to anyone who would listen. You have done an amazing job!"

What to expect: “The best, most fun, and rewarding job on campus”… according to our past instructors. You will learn speaking, presentation, and leadership skills that are directly applicable in business, the ‘real’ world, academia, and non-profits! Our alumni instructors have gone on to work at top companies such as Google, Facebook, McKinsey, Bain, Teach for America, Peace Corps, and top graduate schools.

New instructors and class aides can teach from 1 to 3 days a week. The total time commitment for each day of teaching involves 2-3 hours of teaching and roundtrip travel in the afternoon (don’t worry, we provide carpools), as well as about 1 hour of preparation and parent emails, for which you are also compensated.

Usually after their first year of teaching, experienced instructors begin to take leadership positions within the organization, becoming assistant and then full team leads in which they manage and lead 5-10 of their peers at one of our school sites. This is a unique opportunity to develop leadership and management skills in a real-world business setting.

Senior team leads gain hands-on experience in running the company itself, coordinating and overseeing teams of 50-100 instructors, and gaining experience in leadership, operations, marketing, finance, and communications.

Applicant FAQs

1. What is the expected time commitment?
Instructors can work as little as 1 day a week. Depending on experience, new instructors can teach up to 3 days a week at different sites. For each session taught, an instructor can expect to log about 1.5 hours of teaching time, 30 minutes of travel, 30 minutes of parent emails, and 30 minutes to an hour of teaching prep per week (for a grand total of ~3 hours per site per week).

2. How many kids will I be teaching?
Instructors teach math to a group of 3-8 children each session. Some freshmen who join F4Ed will start out as class aides who work closely with an experienced instructor in the program and are able to observe their instruction. This lets them gain the experience to move to an instructor role. They can be assigned to one small group, or move around from group to group, helping where needed. Often, class aides are promoted to an instructor position within one quarter, so you'll have the opportunity to grow & gain responsibility very quickly.

3. I’m an international student. Am I still eligible to apply?
We are not an on-campus group, and so cannot currently accept international students with J-1 or F-1 visas. We apologize for the inconvenience

4. I’ve never taught before, can I still apply?
All of our instructors are required to attend an orientation session and receive continual training throughout the quarter. Experienced instructors also hold weekly office hours for you to receive assistance in lesson planning.
